Buzzwords such as “grit,” “resilience,” and “mindfulness” fill headlines around child development and education today, but what do they really mean? They all relate to our ability to sustain focus, persist, plan, and manage the challenges of everyday life. They also relate to a cognitive skill set called “executive function,” which is directly impacted by ADHD. For children, EF involves many of the skills needed to succeed in school and socially. For adults, it is what we use to manage the stress of dealing with technology and chaos of modern life. On a practical, day-to-day level, what does research teach us about how to build resilience and promote EF in our children … and in ourselves? Thankfully, building resilience is possible for anyone, with or without ADHD – it’s the modern science of getting back to the basics.
