SUMMARY:Windward School: Mindfulness\, Self-Compassion\, and Stress Management for ADHD: Creating a Resilient Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness and self-compassion practices have been shown to improve our well-being\, motivation\, and how we treat people around us.   Researchers have demonstrated that from childhood to adulthood\, counter to often feared\, letting go of perfectionism and self-criticism provides huge benefits in life.  We can build the ability to tackle our challenges giving ourselves the same benefit of the doubt we would give a close friend.   That perspective is even more vital with ADHD\, because of chronic struggles with life management\, executive function-based\, skills that undermine self-confidence and self-image.  Without self-compassion\, it becomes that much harder to stay motivated and get a handle on ADHD.  For parents\, teens and adults\, a healthy dose of self-compassion goes a long way to managing ADHD with more persistence\, skill and success.

SUMMARY:2021 VIRTUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADHD
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness in Three Parts: A Complex Cognitive Toolset for Complex ADHD\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADHD and mindfulness are both often underestimated and oversimplified.   ADHD is not specifically about attention or behavior\, as it is a wide-ranging disorder that undermines executive function skills responsible for all of life management.  ADHD therefore can cause anything from chronic stress to long-term health problems\, and impacts near every aspect of life.   Mindfulness\, meanwhile\, is not about paying attention or being calm specifically.   It grows out of long-term practice and allows us to stay more settled under stress\, allowing us to see our lives with clarity and determination\, and encompasses both compassion and ethics. Mindfulness develops cognitive traits through direct practice over time and through that effort allows us to stay more focused\, make better choices\, and to stick to our best intentions more consistently in how we live\, and how we treat other people.   While the word ‘mindful’ has been appropriated in many ways\, the underlying intention runs deep.   Studies suggest brain-based changes in focused attention (even if you have ADHD)\, stress management\, emotional regulation\, and even compassion.   Those radical changes support all aspects of ADHD care. \nRegister HERE: https://events.bizzabo.com/321577/home

SUMMARY:Windward Teacher Training Institute: Executive Function Skills In Children: What You Need to Know and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:One of the newest findings in child development is the importance of executive function\, a set of cognitive abilities that act as our “brain manager.” Executive function is responsible for self-monitoring\, planning\, organizing\, and is related to both emotional regulation and resilience. It is critical for social development\, family relationships\, and academics. Many choices we make as adults can impact the development of executive function in children as it evolves from infancy to young adulthood. In this workshop\, Dr. Mark Bertin\, the distinguished author of numerous books on child development\, will include a discussion of how research on executive function can guide teachers and parents in making wise decisions with children of any age.

SUMMARY:Sen Talk CIC: Parents\, Children and ADHD – Getting Families Back on Track
DESCRIPTION:Description: \n\nADHD is a complex neurobiological disorder that affects both children and their families.  Recent research has shown that parents of children with ADHD experience increased rates of anxiety\, depression\, stress\, and marital issues.  Stress alone can strain relationships and make it harder to parent consistently and to problem solve flexibly.  When children have ADHD\, it often affects their relationship with their parents and their parents’ relationship with each other. \nBroad-based ADHD care integrates behavioral\, education\, and medical supports that help both children and families move beyond these challenges. Dr. Bertin’s talk will include an overview of ADHD care\, nonmedical as well as medical.  It will also offer an introduction to mindfulness-based stress reduction\, a research-based and accessible approach to help parents reduce stress and promote their family’s well-being. \n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nCommon ways ADHD and executive function deficits impact day-to-day life for children and their parents\, along with techniques to help manage these challenges\nThe effects of ADHD on parents and families\, from a research as well as a clinical perspective\nBoth medical and non-medical evidenced-based interventions can support families in managing ADHD\, and that help minimize ADHD symptoms and promote well-being in families\nCurrent scientific research demonstrating the positive effects of mindfulness training on attention and self-regulation\, cognitive flexibility\, stress reduction\, parenting\, relationships\, and in young children\, along with an introduction to mindfulness tools for daily living.\n\nRegister here for the FREE webinar: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sen-explained-parents-children-and-adhd-getting-families-back-on-track-tickets-137269736477

SUMMARY:Beyond Medication: Evidence-based Non-Medical Care For ADHD
DESCRIPTION:Although the benefits of medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown through numerous well-designed studies\, medication alone rarely addresses the full range of issues caused by this complex neurobiological condition.   Most people with ADHD have ‘comorbid’ conditions\, such as developmental delays\, learning disabilities\, or mental health disorders.  Executive function related difficulties persists even with optimal medical care\, impacting home life\, school performance\, and work.  And ADHD also affects health routines in ways that undermine ADHD itself.   Lastly\, while medications benefit up to ninety percent of people with ADHD\, one in ten rely on other paths for treatment. \nThis talk emphasizes research around non-medical care for ADHD\, outlining a holistic\, evidence-based approach.   It includes a review of behavioral interventions\, parent training\, educational supports\, and a discussion of evidence around complementary practices such as dietary interventions\, exercise\, mindfulness\, and attention training.  Participants will gain a more comprehensive view of ADHD care that effectively integrates both medical and nonmedical options.  \n  \n3.    Learning Objectives:   \nTo understand the full impact of ADHD on executive function \nTo understand how comorbid disorders relates to managing ADHD in daily life \nTo understand research showing the potential benefits of ADHD medications\, as well as their limitations \nTo create a comprehensive approach to ADHD that integrates research around behavioral\, parenting\, and educational interventions \nTo understand which complementary approaches have evidence either for or against their use

SUMMARY:"Managing Media with the Brain in Mind"
DESCRIPTION:Are you using media or being used by it? Modern technology can be exhausting and stress-inducing for any of us – particularly during these challenging times. Sorting out best uses and boundaries around media bedevils parents and teachers\, battling to maintain common-sense limits while seeking a balance between media as a resource and entertainment. In spite of its importance at this moment in history\, increased screen time has still been linked to everything from academic problems to obesity\, early-drinking to disturbances in executive function. And yet\, strong parental involvement with moderating media alone has been linked to social\, behavioral\, and academic success. Technology is not inherently bad but needs to be handled skillfully to be safe and useful for our children … and for ourselves. While touching on research\, this talk emphasizes practical tips and tools for everyday life and finding balance during the pandemic. \nRegister HERE!

DESCRIPTION:Just as ADHD is more than many people realize\, so is mindfulness.   ADHD is a wide-ranging disorder that undermines executive function\, causes stress\, and potentially impacts near every aspect of daily life.   Mindfulness is a long-term practice that allows us to better stay focused and settled under stress\, teaches cognitive flexibility\, and encompasses both compassion and ethics.   It doesn’t mean sitting still and is more than time spent on an engaging hobby.  The concept of ‘nonjudgmental awareness’ means training ourselves to see our experience with clarity and determination. \nMindfulness is a lifelong practice that has been shown\, like physical exercise\, to train traits needed to manage life skillfully.  While the word ‘mindful’ has been appropriated in many ways\, the underlying intention runs deep.   Studies suggest brain-based changes in focused attention (even if you have ADHD)\, stress management\, emotional regulation\, and even compassion.  Mindfulness develops various cognitive traits through direct practice over time\, and through those changes supports all aspects of ADHD care. \n\nTo recognize the impact of ADHD and executive function on stress and emotion\nTo explain the importance of flexible problem solving and persistence in ADHD care\nTo review the benefits of stress management on ADHD care\nTo describe mindfulness as an extensive and ongoing three-part practice building practical traits for managing everyday life\nTo introduce mindfulness practices that demonstrate focus and staying settled\, working with habits\, and compassion\n\nRegister free here: https://chadd.org/webinars/ask-the-expert-mindfulness-stress-emotion-ask-the-expert/

SUMMARY:International CHADD Conference
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness\, ADHD and emotion \nEmotional dysregulation is a common\, core symptom of ADHD that is often under-addressed. Even when other treatments are useful\, they don’t always touch this key aspect of ADHD. Emotional reactivity can be incredibly disruptive for individuals and families\, undermining their own well-being\, resilience\, and social relationships. On the other hand\, several of the most proven benefits of mindfulness regards to stress\, anxiety\, and emotions. Because of that\, mindfulness has been shown useful in children with ADHD as young as seven years old\, specifically around emotion. What does ADHD have to do with emotion—and what works best in supporting adults and children in managing their emotions? How does mindfulness affect the emotional impact of ADHD—and can anyone with ADHD practice mindfulness?

SUMMARY:Mindful Family: An interactive\, engaging online event for parents\, exploring how to build resilience\, happiness and compassion (with less effort and stress)
DESCRIPTION:In these troubling times\, how can mindfulness support us as parents … and our children too? \nFor the first time together\, join clinicians\, mindfulness experts\, authors\, and parents Drs Mark Bertin\, Christopher Willard and Susan Kaiser Greenland for a playful and engaging evening of mindfulness\, compassion\, self-compassion\, and practical parenting advice. Through a brief presentation\, experiential exercises\, and Q & A\, you will explore the interpersonal neurobiology of mindfulness and emotion\, and research behind healthy and positive emotional “contagions” spreading within families.  You will learn practical\, child-friendly applications of mindful awareness\, compassion\, and self-compassion\, along with techniques for adults and children to quiet their inner critics. \nThrough fun and simple activities\, you’ll investigate ways to develop the wisdom and clarity needed to figure out how to integrate mindfulness and compassion into your family routine.  If like many of us you have said to yourself “I’m the worst parent in the world”  – you are not alone.  And of course\, you’re not the worst parent either. In fact\, you only need to trust yourself and to be “good enough” for your children to thrive.

SUMMARY:Mindful Schools - Executive Function: What It Is and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:One of the newest discoveries in child development is the importance of executive function (EF)\, a set of cognitive abilities responsible for self-monitoring\, life management\, and emotional regulation.   EF is also critical for social development\, family relationships\, and academic success.  EF gradually matures as a development path\, so recognizing how these skills develop can guide both parents and teachers through the years.   While many parents and providers are familiar with executive function as it relates to ADHD\, familiarity with EF supports all children in numerous practical ways.   Understanding executive function relates to everything from decision-making around classroom routines\, technology\, and discipline\, to understand the impact of ADHD – and the benefits of mindfulness.   This talk includes a review of current research that supports practical choices from infancy through young adulthood\, fostering resilience and setting children up to thrive.
