SUMMARY:MFY - Mindfulness and Self Compassion for ADHD with Dr. Mark Bertin
DESCRIPTION:A practice of self-compassion has been shown to improve our well-being\, motivation\, and how we treat people around us. Researchers have demonstrated that from childhood to adulthood\, counter to often feared\, letting go of perfectionism and self-criticism provides huge benefits in life. It’s not a new-age cry that everyone is perfect as they are\, but the opposite – it’s building the ability to tackle challenges with the same benefit of the doubt you would give a close friend. It’s even more vital with ADHD\, because of chronic struggles with life-management\, executive function-based\, skills that undermine self-confidence and self-image. Without self-compassion\, it becomes that much harder to stay motivated and get a handle on ADHD. For parents\, teens\, and adults\, a healthy dose of self-compassion goes a long way to managing ADHD with more persistence\, skill\, and success. \n1. To recognize the impact of ADHD on self-confidence and self-esteem.
\n2. To understand the impact of low self-confidence and self-esteem on motivation and resilience.
\n3. To understand the impact of low self-confidence and self-esteem on emotion and behavior towards others.
\n4. To explain research in self-compassion on its own and in relation to ADHD
\n5. To introduce self-compassion practices applicable in everyday life

SUMMARY:Windward School: "Executive Functioning Skills in Children: What you need to know and why it matters"
DESCRIPTION:Executive function\, a set of cognitive abilities that act as our “brain manager\,” is a key foundation for parents and teachers to understand child\ndevelopment. These skills are responsible for self-monitoring\, planning\, and organizing and are related to both emotional regulation and resilience. It is critical for social development\, family relationships\, and academics. \nThese workshops engage participants in the current expertise and practical strategies to support children’s executive functioning skills at home and at school. Mark Bertin\, MD\, developmental pediatrician\, will first provide a foundational overview of executive functioning development in children\, while Lydia H. Soifer\, PhD\, Pediatric Language and Literacy Specialist\, will share specific techniques to support executive functioning within a framework of cognitive and language development in the classroom. \nUnderstanding executive function helps meet children where they are developmentally and increase their likelihood of well-being and success. Decisions we make as adults may also impact the development of executive function in children as it evolves from infancy to young adulthood. \nIn this workshop\, Mark Bertin\, MD\, developmental pediatrician and author of numerous books on child development\, will discuss the latest research\non executive function and explain how it can guide educators and parents in making wise decisions with children of any age. \nRegister here: https://www.thewindwardschool.org/the-windward-institute/courses-workshops-lectures/how-to-register

SUMMARY:ADDitude Webinar: “I Didn’t Mean It!” How ADHD Affects Communication — and Strategies to Improve It"
DESCRIPTION:ADHD is more than an attention disorder. ADHD impacts a broader cognitive skill set called executive functions. Executive functions act as the brain manager\, coordinating\, planning\, and executing everything from home schedules and organization to health routines to school assignments to communication in relationships. ADHD can undermine all of this — creating stress in daily routines\, straining relationships\, and leading to poor health outcomes. \nOne of the most under-discussed aspects of ADHD is its effect on communication — with children\, spouses\, coworkers\, and friends. In this webinar\, we’re reviewing the impact of ADHD and executive function challenges on communication\, as well as practical solutions for communicating with more ease — and clarity and less reactivity. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn how \n\nExecutive function challenges and ADHD symptoms directly affect communication\nADHD and communication shortcomings affect classroom learning\, behavioral plans\, and relationships\nEmotional reactivity related to ADHD can damage relationships\nEffective communication techniques can help overcome ADHD’s negative effects on daily living\n\nRegister Here: https://goto.webcasts.com/starthere.jsp?ei=1522014&tp_key=93f4ac09e7

SUMMARY:Windward School: "Time management and Self-advocacy for Children with ADHD"
DESCRIPTION:Raising children who are reslient\, persistant and act as strong self advocates is a universal goal for parent and teachers.   Those traits all rely on executive function\, a developmental path relates to the cognitive skills chidkren use to organize\, plan\, and sustain effort towards future goals.  ADHD itself is best seen as a developmental delay of these self management skills\, which means it directly impacts a child’s ability to plan and self advocate.   How can adults  teach chidkren to self advocate\, while making sure they thrive and stay self confident in the way?

SUMMARY:2021 VIRTUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADHD
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness in Three Parts: A Complex Cognitive Toolset for Complex ADHD\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADHD and mindfulness are both often underestimated and oversimplified.   ADHD is not specifically about attention or behavior\, as it is a wide-ranging disorder that undermines executive function skills responsible for all of life management.  ADHD therefore can cause anything from chronic stress to long-term health problems\, and impacts near every aspect of life.   Mindfulness\, meanwhile\, is not about paying attention or being calm specifically.   It grows out of long-term practice and allows us to stay more settled under stress\, allowing us to see our lives with clarity and determination\, and encompasses both compassion and ethics. Mindfulness develops cognitive traits through direct practice over time and through that effort allows us to stay more focused\, make better choices\, and to stick to our best intentions more consistently in how we live\, and how we treat other people.   While the word ‘mindful’ has been appropriated in many ways\, the underlying intention runs deep.   Studies suggest brain-based changes in focused attention (even if you have ADHD)\, stress management\, emotional regulation\, and even compassion.   Those radical changes support all aspects of ADHD care. \nRegister HERE: https://events.bizzabo.com/321577/home

SUMMARY:ADDA Webinar: Self Compassion & ADHD
DESCRIPTION:A practice of self-compassion has been shown to improve our well-being\, motivation\, and how we treat people around us. Researchers have demonstrated that from childhood to adulthood\, counter to often feared\, letting go of perfectionism and self-criticism provides huge benefits in life. It’s not a new-age cry that everyone is perfect as they are\, but the opposite – it’s building the ability to tackle challenges with the same benefit of the doubt you would give a close friend. It’s even more vital with ADHD\, because of chronic struggles with life management\, executive function-based\, skills that undermine self-confidence and self-image. Without self-compassion\, it becomes that much harder to stay motivated and get a handle on ADHD. For parents\, teens\, and adults\, a healthy dose of self-compassion goes a long way to managing ADHD with more persistence\, skill\, and success \nRegister FREE: https://adda.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dAiYlTiCQDGf8XA-lL_AlQ \n

SUMMARY:Windward Teacher Training Institute: Executive Function Skills In Children: What You Need to Know and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:One of the newest findings in child development is the importance of executive function\, a set of cognitive abilities that act as our “brain manager.” Executive function is responsible for self-monitoring\, planning\, organizing\, and is related to both emotional regulation and resilience. It is critical for social development\, family relationships\, and academics. Many choices we make as adults can impact the development of executive function in children as it evolves from infancy to young adulthood. In this workshop\, Dr. Mark Bertin\, the distinguished author of numerous books on child development\, will include a discussion of how research on executive function can guide teachers and parents in making wise decisions with children of any age.

SUMMARY:Sen Talk CIC: Parents\, Children and ADHD – Getting Families Back on Track
DESCRIPTION:Description: \n\nADHD is a complex neurobiological disorder that affects both children and their families.  Recent research has shown that parents of children with ADHD experience increased rates of anxiety\, depression\, stress\, and marital issues.  Stress alone can strain relationships and make it harder to parent consistently and to problem solve flexibly.  When children have ADHD\, it often affects their relationship with their parents and their parents’ relationship with each other. \nBroad-based ADHD care integrates behavioral\, education\, and medical supports that help both children and families move beyond these challenges. Dr. Bertin’s talk will include an overview of ADHD care\, nonmedical as well as medical.  It will also offer an introduction to mindfulness-based stress reduction\, a research-based and accessible approach to help parents reduce stress and promote their family’s well-being. \n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nCommon ways ADHD and executive function deficits impact day-to-day life for children and their parents\, along with techniques to help manage these challenges\nThe effects of ADHD on parents and families\, from a research as well as a clinical perspective\nBoth medical and non-medical evidenced-based interventions can support families in managing ADHD\, and that help minimize ADHD symptoms and promote well-being in families\nCurrent scientific research demonstrating the positive effects of mindfulness training on attention and self-regulation\, cognitive flexibility\, stress reduction\, parenting\, relationships\, and in young children\, along with an introduction to mindfulness tools for daily living.\n\nRegister here for the FREE webinar: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sen-explained-parents-children-and-adhd-getting-families-back-on-track-tickets-137269736477

SUMMARY:Beyond Medication: Evidence-based Non-Medical Care For ADHD
DESCRIPTION:Although the benefits of medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown through numerous well-designed studies\, medication alone rarely addresses the full range of issues caused by this complex neurobiological condition.   Most people with ADHD have ‘comorbid’ conditions\, such as developmental delays\, learning disabilities\, or mental health disorders.  Executive function related difficulties persists even with optimal medical care\, impacting home life\, school performance\, and work.  And ADHD also affects health routines in ways that undermine ADHD itself.   Lastly\, while medications benefit up to ninety percent of people with ADHD\, one in ten rely on other paths for treatment. \nThis talk emphasizes research around non-medical care for ADHD\, outlining a holistic\, evidence-based approach.   It includes a review of behavioral interventions\, parent training\, educational supports\, and a discussion of evidence around complementary practices such as dietary interventions\, exercise\, mindfulness\, and attention training.  Participants will gain a more comprehensive view of ADHD care that effectively integrates both medical and nonmedical options.  \n  \n3.    Learning Objectives:   \nTo understand the full impact of ADHD on executive function \nTo understand how comorbid disorders relates to managing ADHD in daily life \nTo understand research showing the potential benefits of ADHD medications\, as well as their limitations \nTo create a comprehensive approach to ADHD that integrates research around behavioral\, parenting\, and educational interventions \nTo understand which complementary approaches have evidence either for or against their use

SUMMARY:"Managing Media with the Brain in Mind"
DESCRIPTION:Are you using media or being used by it? Modern technology can be exhausting and stress-inducing for any of us – particularly during these challenging times. Sorting out best uses and boundaries around media bedevils parents and teachers\, battling to maintain common-sense limits while seeking a balance between media as a resource and entertainment. In spite of its importance at this moment in history\, increased screen time has still been linked to everything from academic problems to obesity\, early-drinking to disturbances in executive function. And yet\, strong parental involvement with moderating media alone has been linked to social\, behavioral\, and academic success. Technology is not inherently bad but needs to be handled skillfully to be safe and useful for our children … and for ourselves. While touching on research\, this talk emphasizes practical tips and tools for everyday life and finding balance during the pandemic. \nRegister HERE!
